About Us
Hi, I’m James Halstead, owner of FORTIS Canine LLC and Master Dog Trainer dedicated to developing reliable, well-balanced dogs through structured, results-driven training.

James Bryant Halstead is a professional dog trainer and instructor specializing in working dogs, service dog development, and performance-based training systems. A certified Master Dog Trainer and Law Enforcement K9 Decoy (Basic and Advanced), he is also an instructor in PETTEC and K9 Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC), delivering a disciplined, results-driven approach grounded in real-world application. His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science in Allied Health from Southern New Hampshire University, along with Master’s degrees in Project Management and Operations Management and a professional certificate in Supply Chain Management—an educational foundation that supports the design of structured, efficient training programs tailored to both individual clients and organizational demands.
Halstead’s methodology is forged from more than two decades of service as a U.S. Navy Diver Chief, where he operated in high-risk, high-performance environments across 48 countries. Over the course of his career, he accumulated nearly eight years of logged underwater diving operations, approximately seven and a half years conducting outside-the-wire combat operations, and more than 16 years of overseas deployments. Enlisting in 1994, he rose through some of the Navy’s most demanding and specialized communities, earning distinction for precision, leadership, and operational excellence.
His early assignments included service aboard USS Kearsarge (LHD-3), where he supported Mediterranean deployments, humanitarian operations, and the recovery of downed Air Force Captain Scott O’Grady in Bosnia. After graduating near the top of his class in Navy Diver training, he served in elite units including Mobile Diving and Salvage Units ONE and TWO, as well as Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit TWO. In support of these elite commands, he was also attached to special operations forces in various capacities, contributing to joint, clandestine, and mission-specific operations requiring adaptability, discretion, and precision under pressure.
Halstead’s operational specialties include underwater demolitions, breaching operations, designated marksman roles, tactical communications, anti-terrorism, and counter-terrorism. His experience spans underwater construction and demolition, force protection, explosive operations, and sustained combat deployments in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Arabian Gulf. He led high-performing teams in complex, high-threat environments, including extended deployments executing hundreds of dive missions in strategically critical waterways.
As a senior enlisted leader, Halstead directed large-scale training programs, managed weapons and explosives accountability, and ensured expeditionary combat readiness across multiple theaters. His leadership also extended into strategic coordination roles, serving as a liaison between submarine forces, special operations commands, and naval engineering entities. In these roles, he contributed to the certification and execution of specialized undersea operations in direct support of Navy SEAL delivery systems and joint special operations missions.
From this foundation, Halstead developed a training philosophy defined by precision, accountability, and consistency under pressure. He applies these principles to produce reliable dogs and capable, confident handlers across service dog programs, working K9 units, and private instruction. Driven by his own combat-related disabilities, he brings a deeply personal commitment to his work—understanding firsthand the critical role a properly trained dog plays in restoring independence and stability. His mission is clear: to develop dependable canine partners and equip those who rely on them with the skill and confidence to perform when it matters most.
