Fortis Canine was founded out of necessity by a 24-year naval special operations combat veteran whose journey through combat and subsequent challenges shaped a mission to empower others. After years of deployment and multiple combat tours, I faced the struggle of living with combat-related injuries and Complex PTSD.

When I returned home, I sought the companionship of a service dog but soon discovered that I did not meet the stringent criteria for service animal assistance. The cost of obtaining a trained dog—ranging from $25,000 to $55,000—and the three-year waiting period proved to be formidable barriers. Determined to take control of my healing journey, I embarked on a self-training path.

My journey began with my first dog, Beaux, a black lab-blue heeler mix, who was adopted on a whim at a local horse show, thanks to the loving selection of my children. For just $50, Beaux became my lifeline; his unwavering companionship ignited my passion for canine learning theory and the transformative impact of well-trained dogs.

Through extensive study at Highland Canine School of Dog Trainers, I honed my skills as a master dog trainer. Beaux helped me reclaim my sense of self, enabling me to confront the shadows of depression and PTSD. Witnessing firsthand the healing power of a loyal canine companion, I felt compelled to share this experience with fellow veterans and passionate dog lovers seeking a brighter path beyond their own struggles.

As a company, our mission has always been to empower the human-canine bond, and this partnership allows me to concentrate our efforts on one of my deepest passions—ensuring the health and well-being of our canine partners.

As a former EMT with experience in Military Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) and as a Diving Medical Technician, I have always had a strong passion for medicine. While my mobility limitations prevent me from working with human patients, I’ve redirected that knowledge and enthusiasm toward the care of animals. This new chapter in our journey involves utilizing my medical expertise to provide essential training and resources for pet owners and canine handlers.

I have recently obtained an Impact K9 TCCC certification and become a Pet Tech Certified Instructor for Pet CPR and First Aid. This training is crucial as it empowers average pet owners and professional K9 handlers with the skills they need to stabilize and care for their dogs during emergencies, ultimately buying valuable time to get to a veterinarian.

As we move forward, Fortis Canine is committed to enhancing the lives of canines and their human companions through quality training and crucial medical education.
