My Story
James B. Halstead is a Master Dog Trainer at KPro K9, bringing more than 24 years of military service and a distinguished operational background to the world of canine training. A retired Navy Diver Chief, combat veteran, and proven leader, he is known for a training style grounded in precision, discipline, and uncompromising standards.
James served more than 24 years in the United States Navy, including 10 years in the diving community as a First Class Navy Diver and Leading Chief Petty Officer for four major diving commands. He then spent 14 years in highly specialized operational roles as an EOD Team Chief, supporting mission-critical work in some of the most demanding environments military service can require. Those years shaped a professional standard built on composure, accountability, and dependable performance under pressure. Through his exposure to operational canine teams, he developed a deep respect for the bond, trust, and consistency required to create reliable working dogs and capable handlers.
He holds a Master’s degree in Project Management and a Master’s degree in Operations Management from Southern New Hampshire University, along with a certificate in Supply Chain Management. He also earned a Bachelor’s degree in Allied Health and a certificate in Mental Health Counseling. His academic background reinforces a structured, individualized approach to canine training that balances methodical planning with practical application.
James is a Certified Master Dog Trainer through the Highland Canine School of Dog Trainers, an AKC Evaluator, and a professional member of the International Association of Canine Professionals. His additional credentials include Certified Advanced Law Enforcement K9 Decoy, Impact K9 Tactical Combat Casualty Care Professional, and PETTECH Pet CPR and First Aid Instructor.
At KPro K9, James specializes in service dog training, obedience, scent work, and behavior modification. He is committed to producing reliable dogs and confident handlers through proven methods, clear communication, and exacting standards.
Fortis Canine was born from James’s own recovery journey. After combat service, injuries, and the effects of PTSD, he was searching for stability and purpose when he found a dog named Beaux at his daughter’s saddle club event and bought him for $50. At the time, he did not know exactly what he needed in a dog or how to train one the right way. He learned through trial, error, persistence, and hard-earned experience. Beaux ultimately saved his life twice, and that bond changed the direction of his life.
That experience became the reason James chose to make canine training his profession and his mission. Through Fortis Canine, he is dedicated to serving others, especially veterans, by helping them develop dependable dogs, stronger handler relationships, and practical tools for everyday life.
