Fortis Canine LLC Joins the DDS4VETS Mission Through KPro K9

Fortis Canine LLC Supports Veteran Service Dogs with DDS4VETS Through KPro K9

Fortis Canine LLC is honored to announce a new chapter in serving veterans. As a contract dog trainer with KPro K9 in Port Saint Lucie, Florida, I now support DDS4VETS, a nonprofit that trains and provides service dogs to our nation’s veterans at no cost. This veteran service dog work is the heart of why I started Fortis Canine LLC. I want to serve those who served, and help veterans and their families find the support, independence, and security a well-trained service dog can provide.

My name is James B. Halstead. I am a 24-year military veteran and the owner of Fortis Canine LLC. I am also a contract dog trainer with KPro K9, a Master Dog Trainer certified through Highland Canine School of Dog Trainers, and a PETTECH Pet CPR and First Aid Instructor. Supporting DDS4VETS through KPro K9 brings together my military service, my professional canine work, and the mission behind Fortis Canine LLC.

What Is DDS4VETS?

DDS4VETS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by Deb Doherty with a clear mission: to bring positive, lasting solutions to our military veterans and their families. As Deb Doherty has said, “Bridging the gap that veterans face with services that they are entitled to is imperative.”

DDS4VETS provides fully trained service dogs to veterans in need, at no cost to the veteran. These dogs are trained to detect and respond to symptoms of post-traumatic stress (PTS) and to support veterans living with physical disabilities. DDS4VETS also connects veterans with a nationwide network of resources. These include VA medical center and clinic locators, veteran-focused real estate professionals, nonprofit partners, classes, and crisis support information such as the 988 Lifeline.

How DDS4VETS, KPro K9, and Fortis Canine Work Together

Each organization plays its own role in providing service dogs for veterans:

• DDS4VETS is the nonprofit that places trained service dogs with veterans and connects them with resources.

• KPro K9 is the professional dog training company that contracts with DDS4VETS to support its service dog training.

• James B. Halstead serves as a contract dog trainer with KPro K9. Through KPro K9, he works directly on training that supports DDS4VETS veterans and their dogs.

• Fortis Canine LLC provides service dog education resources and canine first aid kits for handlers, including veteran service dog teams.

Why Veteran Service Dogs Matter to Me

Across 24 years of military service, I spent 10 years in the Navy diving community as a First Class Navy Diver and Leading Chief Petty Officer. I also spent 14 years in highly specialized EOD assignments, including service as an EOD Team Chief and combat tours with EOD units in Afghanistan and Iraq. I deployed to 42 countries and worked alongside special forces in both my diving and EOD roles.

I know firsthand what service can cost. Many of the men and women I served with still carry the weight of it. Some face invisible wounds such as PTSD. Many face a confusing path when trying to access the services they have earned. A trained PTSD service dog can change that path. It can restore confidence, independence, and a sense of safety that may have been missing for years.

This is why I started Fortis Canine LLC, and why supporting DDS4VETS through KPro K9 means so much to me.

Service Dog Training in Port Saint Lucie, Florida

As a KPro K9 contract trainer in St. Lucie County supporting DDS4VETS, my training focus includes:

• Service dog training for veterans

• Obedience training

• Scent work

• Behavior modification

Every dog placed with a veteran must be reliable, calm, and capable in the real world. I bring to this work the same discipline, consistency, and precision I relied on throughout my military career.

Looking ahead, I am also working toward a new role as a peer support counselor. This will let me support veterans not only through their service dogs, but also through shared experience and understanding.

Service Dog Laws and Education for Veterans

Separately from my training role, Fortis Canine LLC offers a free Service Dog Resource Center. Veterans and their families often find service dog information scattered, unclear, or hard to navigate. Fortis Canine LLC gathers resources from reliable sources and organizes them so they are easier to use. Topics include:

• Service dog federal laws, including the ADA and HUD

• Service dog documentation requirements for housing and travel

• Service dog state laws for all 50 states

• Service dog etiquette and public access

• Service dog terminology and tasking

• Cruise ship service dog laws and requirements

I did not create the underlying laws or regulations. My goal is to make reliable information accessible, so veteran handlers can move through the world with confidence and know their rights and responsibilities.

Canine First Aid for Service Dog Teams

A service dog is a partner, and that partner deserves protection. I am a PETTECH Pet CPR and First Aid Instructor and an Impact K9 Tactical Combat Casualty Care Professional. I believe every handler should be ready to respond when their dog is injured or in distress. Fortis Canine LLC builds canine first aid kits for real-world use, helping protect the dogs who protect our veterans.

Professional Credentials

My work is informed by operational experience, formal education, and professional canine credentials, including:

• Bachelor’s degree in Allied Health, Southern New Hampshire University
